Anna Nicole Smith misplaced millions in jewels

January 28th, 2010

Newly released government files offer a glimpse into the money troubles that plagued Anna Nicole Smith at the height of her notoriety, ranging from millions in missing jewels to unpaid utility bills.

The Department of Justice files that detail her 1996 bankruptcy filing also noted her lack of understanding of her financial woes.

“She did not know why she was in bankruptcy,” an unidentified Chapter 11 examiner wrote in a 1996 report that was part of the government file obtained by The Associated Press under a Freedom of Information Act request.

The files offer a glimpse into the life of the late former Playmate whose public image was exemplified by a 1994 New York magazine cover picturing her in white cowboy boots and eating from a bag of Cheez Doodles, with the headline “White Trash Nation.”

Assets noted in her file include a Russian lynx coat appraised at $43,343.75 and a necklace with a 500-carat sapphire, but also six potbellied pigs and a $12,000 doll collection. A safety deposit box at a New York bank held nearly $1 million in jewelry, but also a bottle of her perfume and a copy of her calendar.

And while filings list $154,142 in income from modeling and royalties in 1994 and $274,514 the next year, left unpaid were taxes in numerous jurisdictions and even a gas bill for $265.63.

Smith’s bankruptcy filing came after the 1995 death of her billionaire husband, J. Howard Marshall, and put in motion a court battle over his fortune that has continued even after her death. Smith died of an accidental overdose of at least nine medications in February 2007 at a Florida hotel.

Also detailed in the files is Smith’s apparent loss of some $2.7 million in jewelry, including two pieces valued at nearly a half-million dollars apiece: a ring with three diamonds, including one weighing 8.45 carats, and a platinum necklace with 226 diamonds totalling nearly 74 carats. The whereabouts of both were never determined, nor is it known if they were stolen.

In the bankruptcy examiner’s report, the writer often expresses exasperation with Smith, saying she appears drugged during the interview and takes additional pills in the course of the meeting at her home.

“She could barely walk, her speech was slurred, she had to lay down in a darkened room as the light bothered her and she could not remember what she said from one moment to the next,” the examiner reported.

Ron Rale, Smith’s personal attorney during her life and the executor of her estate, didn’t return a message seeking comment after business hours Tuesday.

Aside from the newly released government files, details of Smith’s troubled personal life have also been emerging through the legal problems of her friends. Two of her doctors and her lawyer-boyfriend pleaded not guilty last month to drug conspiracy charges accusing them of illegally providing her sedatives and opiates.

Linda Hogan Shopping Tell-All Book That Hulk ‘Won’t Like’

January 28th, 2010

Just one year after Hulk Hogan released his tell-all book, “My Life Outside the Rings,” which labeled ex-wife Linda Bollea as an “abusive alcoholic,” it seems as though Linda may very well be ready to get her revenge.

Pop Tarts has learned exclusively that Bollea is currently in the process of penning her own “uplifting” tell-all book that details “her life, the traumas and how much better life is now that she is no longer married.”

“She will include all the trials she endured during the marriage, Nick’s accident and the things she has accomplished,” her attorney Ray Rafool told Pop Tarts. “Linda wants people to know her – she understands what it is like to get a divorce, to be a mother with grown children and establish a career and move forward.”

And Hulk be warned – Linda’s words probably won’t be in your favor.

“I don’t think he will like it,” Rafool said. “Unless it is his version, everything else is not true. But Linda isn’t writing it for him.”

No publisher has been attached to the book yet, but Rafool tells Tarts it’s currently being shopped around by her agent at The Literary Group in New York and they hope to have it on the shelves later this year.

ABBAWORLD Theme Park OPENS!

January 28th, 2010

Is it possible to have too much ABBA?

Knowing me, knowing you, the answer is no.

The spangly Swedish quartet that gave the world “Waterloo” and “Dancing Queen” has sold 400 million records since its 1970s heyday and spawned the hugely successful stage and film musical “Mamma Mia!”

And now there’s ABBAWORLD — a new museum-cum-theme park in London with enough music, mementoes and memory-lane appeal to satisfy even the most fervent ABBA fan.

ABBAWORLD’s Swedish organizers promise the exhibition — which opens to the public on Wednesday — will be “a place for total interaction” with the band. The celebration kicks off Tuesday night with a party attended by band members Bjorn Ulvaeus and Anna-Frid “Frida” Lyngstad.

“It started with, ‘How do we give the visitor a big hug in each room?’” said Magnus Danielsson, president of Touring Exhibitions, the company behind ABBAWORLD. “This is going to be more like going to ‘Mamma Mia!’ than going to an exhibition. We want people to sing and dance.”

ABBA’s music is inescapable throughout ABBAWORLD, from the exuberance of “Dancing Queen” through the melancholy of “Knowing Me, Knowing You” to the heartbreak of “The Winner Takes It All” — reminders that the band started off as two married couples and ended as two divorced ones.

The exhibition tells the band’s story in 25 rooms spread over 30,000 square feet (2,800 sq. meters). Glass cases contain spangly costumes in silk, satin and spandex. Visitors can see recreations of Polar Studios, where the band recorded, and the seaside cabin near Stockholm where Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson composed the band’s hits.

Michael Douglas’ Son pleads GUILTY in NY Meth Case

January 28th, 2010

FILE - In this April 27, 2009 file photo, Cameron Douglas, son ...

The hard-luck son of Michael Douglas pleaded guilty on Wednesday to dealing large quantities of methamphetamine and cocaine while holed up in a trendy Manhattan hotel where he was arrested last year.

Cameron Douglas, 31, told a judge that a New York contact first asked him if he could score the drugs in 2006. After that, “I began supplying on a regular basis.”

Asked by a judge if he knew what he was doing was wrong, he replied, “Yes, your honor.”

Prosecutors said Douglas had signed a plea agreement, but the details weren’t disclosed.

In addition to conspiracy to distribute drugs, Douglas pleaded guilty to heroin possession — a charge stemming from allegations that his girlfriend tried to smuggle him the drug in an electric toothbrush while he was under house arrest.

He faces a minimum 10-year prison term at sentencing on April 27.

FILE - In this Aug. 5, 2009 file photo, Jay Leno speaks during ...

Jay Leno tells Oprah Winfrey that he hasn’t spoken to Conan O’Brien throughout the recent contentious negotiations over “The Tonight Show.”

In quotes provided Wednesday by Harpo Productions, Leno tells Winfrey that “it didn’t seem appropriate” to speak to O’Brien. But Leno says the two comedians might talk when “things cool down.”

NBC unseated O’Brien and moved Leno back to the program he had hosted for 17 years. Leno is scheduled to return to “Tonight” on March 1.

In a video previewing “The Oprah Winfrey Show” interview, Leno says: “This whole thing was a huge mess.”

Leno’s interview is slated to air Thursday.

Harpo Productions made an offer for O’Brien to appear on her show, but it hasn’t been confirmed.

ABC is promising that the series will conclude its run in a fashion that will satisfy its fans. ABC says eight episodes are left.

Pete Doherty fined for carrying heroin in court

January 27th, 2010

Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty was fined Wednesday for walking into a court last month with heroin in his pocket.

The British singer, who has a history of drug arrests and once dated supermodel Kate Moss, was at Gloucester Magistrates’ Court in western England to learn his punishment for the December 21 incident, the Press Association reported.

Doherty, 30, appeared in court before Christmas to be fined for careless driving, but as he was being escorted from the premises security guards saw heroin fall from his pocket.

He was immediately arrested and later charged with possession of the illegal drug.

“Either this was sheer stupidity or a ploy to get more publicity,” judge Joti Boparai said Wednesday.

Doherty was fined 750 pounds ($1,200) and 85 pounds in costs. Boparai ruled that, because Doherty was paying for drug treatment privately, it would not be worth taking money from the “public purse” to put him on a rehabilitation order.

Doherty’s lawyer Bruce Clark said the singer felt “very stupid” after being caught with heroin worth nearly 200 pounds in his pocket, but that he had not known it was there.

Intruder arrested at Susan Boyle’s house

January 27th, 2010

A British newspaper says singing sensation Susan Boyle was surprised by an intruder as she returned from recording a charity single for Haiti.

TheSun tabloid says Boyle, who shot to stardom on the back of her appearance on “Britain’s Got Talent” last spring, ran into the man as she returned to her home in the small Scottish village of Blackburn.

Local police did not directly confirm the report, but when asked about Boyle they said that they were called to Blackburn Tuesday night “following reports of a disturbance.”

Police said Wednesday that the unidentified man was detained and but has since been released. A representative for the singer could not immediately be reached.
