Sandra Bullock locked in custody battle

February 3rd, 2010

Between the box office success of “The Blind Side” and Sandra Bullock’s spate of awards and recognition, the Oscar-nominated actress would seem to be having a great couple months.

Privately, though, Bullock and her husband, former “Monster Garage” host Jesse James, are still in the midst of a custody battle over James’ daughter, Sunny. The two are taking steps to formally adopt the 6-year-old.

“Sandra and Jesse have custody of Sunny, but now they want to take it a step further so that Sandra can become her legal mother,” a source told In Touch Weekly.

Sunny’s mother, adult-film star Janine Lindemulder, was recently granted the right to make daily phone calls to the 6-year-old, but she still does not have overnight visitation. According to court papers, James has said that he doesn’t want Lindemulder to have custody of their daughter because he fears she could be exposed to “pornographers, drug addicts, guns and firearms, felons and other unsafe environments.”

As for Bullock, she’s talked in the past about how much she enjoys being a stepmom to Sunny. “I may never hear that word ‘mom,’ but being a parent is not about breeding. It’s about caring,” Bullock told a CBS affiliate last fall.

Jackson’s doc to face manslaughter charge

February 3rd, 2010

conradmurray.jpg

Prosecutors investigating Michael Jackson’s death plan to file a criminal complaint charging the singer’s doctor with involuntary manslaughter rather than seek a grand jury indictment, The Associated Press learned Tuesday, a strategy shift that will give an eager public an earlier look at evidence.

While there is no public timetable for charges to be filed against Dr. Conrad Murray, there are strong indications the move is imminent. Murray and lawyer Edward Chernoff have traveled to Los Angeles from Houston, where Murray practices, and the attorney said his client is prepared to turn himself in.

“If they tell him to surrender in 10 minutes, he’ll go surrender,” said Chernoff, who spent several hours meeting with other members of Murray’s defense team Tuesday. “He’s never hidden, he’s always been available.”

The author of “You Light Up My Life,” tunesmith Joseph Brooks, is staying free while fighting charges of molesting a string of would-be actresses in his Manhattan apartment.

Defense lawyer Jeffrey Hoffman said Tuesday that the Academy Award-winning songwriter sold stock to come up with $1.25 million cash bail.

Brooks’ bail was raised from $250,000 after prosecutors increased the charges against him last month.

The 71-year-old Brooks has pleaded not guilty to predatory sexual assault and other charges.

He’s accused of forcing himself on 13 women. Prosecutors say many of the women had answered Brooks’ ads offering auditions for movie roles.

Brooks won an Oscar for best original song for “You Light Up My Life” in 1977.

I could never assume this guy would do such a thing. Especially from his photo. EGADS!

A judge in Los Angeles is sending the troubled son of Ryan O’Neal and the late Farrah Fawcett back to rehab after more than a month in jail.

The judge placed Redmond O’Neal back on probation and sentenced to an intense residential rehab program during a brief hearing Thursday. The 25-year-old has been jailed since Dec. 29 for violating his probation on a previous drug conviction.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Tynan says if O’Neal succeeds at the rehab program, he will then be sent to a sober-living facility. He may eventually be granted passes to leave, but Tynan says the program will be “justifiably” severe.

O’Neal’s attorney, Richard Pintal, says his client has made considerable progress while in jail and has earned another chance at rehab.

Actor Rip Torn was arrested Friday night for allegedly trying his hand at breaking and entering.

According to the website, the “Men in Black” star broke into the Litchfield Bancorp in Salisbury, Connecticut at 9:40 p.m. Friday.

Officers responded to an alarm after he allegedly broke a window to climb into the bank.

Police say the “ripped” Torn was highly intoxicated and armed with a loaded revolver.

Sources report that he is being held on $100,000 bond at the Troop B barracks in North Canaan.

Torn has been charged with carrying a pistol without a permit, carrying a firearm while intoxicated, first-degree burglary, first-degree criminal trespass and third-degree criminal mischief.

This isn’t the first time Torn has been in trouble with the law. The 78-year-old actor was famously arrested back in 2004 and 2006 for drunk driving.

The 2004 arrest made headlines after a video was released of him going off on the police officers who detained him.

Kevin Federline says Depression led to Overeating

January 29th, 2010

kevin-federline.jpg

Kevin Federline has opened up to Access Hollywood’s Maria Menounos about his battle with depression, weight gain and his relationship with ex-wife Britney Spears.

Federline, who will next be seen as a contestant on VH1’s “Celebrity Fit Club: Boot Camp,” told Menounos that despite the rumors, he did not gain weight to secure a spot on the reality show.

“They called me and they asked me if I wanted to do it and I had maybe 24 hours to decide because the show started taping the next day after that weekend,” he said. “It just couldn’t have come at a better time.”

Married to pop star Britney Spears for two years, Federline revealed that depression played a big part in his overeating.

“Once you get depressed, you don’t really feel like doing anything. You’re kind of discouraged about yourself and then the weight gain too, or that makes me more depressed,” he said. “I mean, it’s a combination of all of those things.”

Federline admitted that his divorce from the pop princess in 2006 played a part in his depression.

Lindsay Lohan’s father arrested again in New York

January 29th, 2010

michael-lohan.jpg

Authorities say Lindsay Lohan’s father has been arrested again.Police on New York’s Long Island say Michael Lohan was arrested Thursday morning and charged with criminal contempt. Police did not provide further details.

Bryan Konoski, an attorney for Lohan’s ex-girlfriend Erin Muller, has told the New York Post that Lohan allegedly phoned Muller at work Jan. 21. That would violate an order of protection.

Lohan had been arrested on a similar charge in December.

In June, a judge said Lohan would avoid prosecution on an aggravated harassment charge if he stayed out of trouble for a year. Lohan denied he threatened to kill his girlfriend and himself if she left him.

Lohan’s attorney had said his client is the victim of fabrications.

The actress reportedly is estranged from her father.

Anna Nicole Smith misplaced millions in jewels

January 28th, 2010

 anna_nicole_smith_investigation.jpg

Newly released government files offer a glimpse into the money troubles that plagued Anna Nicole Smith at the height of her notoriety, ranging from millions in missing jewels to unpaid utility bills.

The Department of Justice files that detail her 1996 bankruptcy filing also noted her lack of understanding of her financial woes.

“She did not know why she was in bankruptcy,” an unidentified Chapter 11 examiner wrote in a 1996 report that was part of the government file obtained by The Associated Press under a Freedom of Information Act request.

The files offer a glimpse into the life of the late former Playmate whose public image was exemplified by a 1994 New York magazine cover picturing her in white cowboy boots and eating from a bag of Cheez Doodles, with the headline “White Trash Nation.”

Assets noted in her file include a Russian lynx coat appraised at $43,343.75 and a necklace with a 500-carat sapphire, but also six potbellied pigs and a $12,000 doll collection. A safety deposit box at a New York bank held nearly $1 million in jewelry, but also a bottle of her perfume and a copy of her calendar.

And while filings list $154,142 in income from modeling and royalties in 1994 and $274,514 the next year, left unpaid were taxes in numerous jurisdictions and even a gas bill for $265.63.

Smith’s bankruptcy filing came after the 1995 death of her billionaire husband, J. Howard Marshall, and put in motion a court battle over his fortune that has continued even after her death. Smith died of an accidental overdose of at least nine medications in February 2007 at a Florida hotel.

Also detailed in the files is Smith’s apparent loss of some $2.7 million in jewelry, including two pieces valued at nearly a half-million dollars apiece: a ring with three diamonds, including one weighing 8.45 carats, and a platinum necklace with 226 diamonds totalling nearly 74 carats. The whereabouts of both were never determined, nor is it known if they were stolen.

In the bankruptcy examiner’s report, the writer often expresses exasperation with Smith, saying she appears drugged during the interview and takes additional pills in the course of the meeting at her home.

“She could barely walk, her speech was slurred, she had to lay down in a darkened room as the light bothered her and she could not remember what she said from one moment to the next,” the examiner reported.

Ron Rale, Smith’s personal attorney during her life and the executor of her estate, didn’t return a message seeking comment after business hours Tuesday.

Aside from the newly released government files, details of Smith’s troubled personal life have also been emerging through the legal problems of her friends. Two of her doctors and her lawyer-boyfriend pleaded not guilty last month to drug conspiracy charges accusing them of illegally providing her sedatives and opiates.
