Philadelphia Boy Scouts Refuse to Change Policy, Loose Lease
After a three year battle with the city of Philadelphia, the Boy Scouts of America refused to change its policy that refuses membership to homosexuals, and will now be evicted from a municipal building.
Since 1928, the Boys Scouts have paid $1 a year in rent, to reside in the Beaux Arts building where the market value for renting it is actually $200,000 a year.
The Boy Scouts argued that the policy preserves their culture as a private organization, but officials say that it is against local law to have tax payers fund a group that discriminates.
The city told the Scouts that they could stay in the building only if they began paying rent; a spokesman stated they could not afford it and the group will be evicted on June 1st.
