Utah’s Mayor Takes First Steps Toward Legalizing Domestic Partnerships
In a state where just four years ago, its constitution was rewritten to ban gay marriage, Utah’s new mayor, Ralph Becker made sure his first official action was to create a citywide registry of domestic partners which includes same-sex couples.
The registry was a campaign promise made by Becker designed to aid employers who are undecided on whether or not to provide insurance benefits to partners.
While conservatives are on board with the registry as long as it does not violate the ban on gay marriage, Yana Walton, spokeswoman for the Utah Pride Center is thrilled that the mayor kept his promise on only his third day in office.
