Radical Church Set to Protest Ledger’s Memorial Service
The Kansas based Westboro Baptist Church announced that they will picket the stateside memorial service for actor Heath Ledger because of his award nominated portrayal of a gay man in Brokeback Mountian.
Westboro Baptist, which is best known for picketing the funerals of U.S. soldiers who were killed in Iraq, stated that by playing Ennis del Mar in Brokeback Mountain, Ledger was living in defiance of God and was sending the message, “God is a liar and it’s OK to be gay.”
The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation has said, “We sincerely hope that Heath Ledger is laid to rest and his family is allowed to grieve in a private and peaceful ceremony.”
