Unfair Prosecution and Torture of HIV+ and Homosexuals in Egypt
The Human Rights Watch is claiming that groups of men are being arrested in Cairo, tortured, given HIV tests without their consent and are handcuffed to hospital beds for 23 hours a day if they test positive for the virus.
Other men are being charged and even convicted of “habitual debauchery,” which refers to homosexual acts and being forced to spend a year in jail despite the fact that there is no evidence against them.
The director of the Human Rights Watch in the Middle East told the BBC today that the men should be released and that HIV-positive citizens should be treated as people who require treatment and care, not as criminals.
