President’s Daughter Aims for Big Changes in Cuba

Since Raul Castro became the President of Cuba, it has been his daughter, Mariela Castro who has promised to push through positive changes for the country. She has been lobbying the government to adopt what would be the most liberal gay and transsexual rights in Latin America.

Castro has worked hard to change the misconception about minority groups in Cuba as the head of the National Centre for Sex Education. She has also proposed a law that would recognize same-sex unions, and allow transsexuals free sex-change operations along with other basic rights as well.

 While Castro says her father is supportive of her work, he has encouraged her to move slowly. She has recognized that if the National Assembly passes her gay rights bill later this year, it would mark a huge change in Cuba’s sexual politics.
