Greek Island Residents Suing Gay Rights Group Over “Lesbian”
Three residents of the island of Lesbos are suing a Greek gay rights group for the use of the word lesbian in its name, say that it is an insult to the island’s identity.
Known as a major tourist destination among gay women, the island of Lesbos is also known as Mytilini, home to Sappho, the ancient poet whose works contain passionate references to love for other women.
The Homosexual and Lesbian Community of Greece is accusing the plaintiffs of homophobia, but the lawyer for the residents is stating that the use of lesbian in the title causes confusion by linking the island residents to a sexual preference.
Arguments from both sides are to be presented next week, with a decision not expected until December.
