First Full Day for Same-Sex Marriage in California
The weddings officially started yesterday at 5:01pm, but there will be many more today when the state of California begins issuing marriage licences to couples regardless of sexual orientation.
After 50 years together Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon, were the first couple married in the office of San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom early yesterday evening. After seeing their 2004 marriage revoked by the Supreme Court, they were surrounded by media and supporters, saying that they were touched by all the attention.
While more than a dozen marriages also took place across the bay in Oakland last night in a packed City Council Chambers, two counties, Kern, north of Los Angeles and Butte, north of Sacramento have have called off all weddings.
