RI House committee to consider gay marriage bill
A committee of the Rhode Island House is expected to hear testimony on a bill that would legalize same sex marriage as advocates for the change rally at the Statehouse. The House Judiciary Committee is scheduled to hear testimony on the bill Wednesday afternoon and evening. A rally is scheduled for 4 p.m. in the Statehouse rotunda. The legislation has been introduced several times over the years, but failed amid opposition from previous Republican Gov. Don Carcieri (kuh-CHEER’-ee) and former legislative leaders.
This year, advocates are optimistic because it has the support of new independent Gov. Lincoln Chafee (CHAY’-fee) and Democratic House Speaker Gordon Fox, who is gay and is a co-sponsor of the bill. Democratic Senate President Teresa Paiva Weed, however, opposes same-sex marriage
