The Moscow government has blocked a lesbian couple’s marriage proposal. Russia’s gay activists have recently stepped up efforts to draw attention to homophobia in lieu of the Eurovision Song Contest.
Irina Fedotova and Irina Chapitko tried to marry at a register office in central Moscow but were told that Russian law only permitted heterosexual marriage.

Senegal’s court of appeal has quashed January’s convictions of nine men for homosexuality and ordered their immediate release. The men belong to a group that fights HIV and Aids.
They were sentenced to eight years in jail after being found guilty of “indecent conduct and unnatural acts” after they were arrested in December in the capital, Dakar.

Six gay men were shot dead by members of their tribe in two separate incidents in the past 10 days, an official with Iraq’s Interior ministry said.
In the most recent attack, two men were killed Thursday in Sadr City area of Baghdad after they were disowned by relatives, the official said. (CNN)

Sweden is now the fifth European country to allow gay marriage.
On Wednesday Parliament gave same-sex couples the right to marry. The new law will take effect on May 1. It will still be up to individual churches to decide if they want to wed gay couples.
The Netherlands, Norway, Belgium and Spain also allow gay marriages.

Moscow’s gay rights activists have planned their Pride festivities to coincide with the popular Eurovision Song Contest in May, potentially facing a showdown between Russia and the international gay community.
Activists will ask contestants to show their support for gay rights by wearing lapel pins onstage on May 16, the final day of competition.
